How to estimate calories from an Instagram recipe

By ForkSum · 26 October 2026

A saved Reel can show you what to cook without telling you what is in a serving. Start with the written ingredients: a photo of the finished dish alone cannot tell ForkSum the quantities used.

1. Open the full caption

Expand the caption so the ingredient list and amounts are visible. Take clear screenshots of the complete list, including any serving count. If it runs across several screens, include each part. Avoid unrelated comments and account details where possible.

2. Upload the screenshots

Open ForkSum, sign in, choose the screenshot input and upload your images. Instagram often blocks automated access to captions, so an Instagram link is not the reliable input here. If you can copy the recipe text, you can paste that instead.

3. Review what was read

Check that every ingredient appears and that the amount makes sense. Pay particular attention to oil, sauces, toppings and optional ingredients. A tablespoon read as a teaspoon changes the estimate. When a recipe says ‘a handful’ or ‘a splash’, the amount is uncertain; keep that uncertainty in mind.

4. Check the serving count

A total for the whole dish is different from a total for your plate. If the recipe makes four equal servings, divide the dish total by four. ForkSum labels an estimated serving count so you can spot an assumption. Copy the numbers you need into your usual tracker.

When the result needs another look

A screenshot missing half the list cannot produce a complete estimate. If an ingredient is omitted or the text is misread, use the reporting option on the result or supply a clearer input. Treat the output as an estimate to review, not a measured nutrition label.
